A blend of red and white grapes, Susucaru in local Catanian dialect means “they swallowed it” or “they stole it.” This is what Frank’s crew shouted during his first harvest when they realized nearly all the grapes had disappeared.
Susucaru is the first wine Frank makes each year; he says it’s his hardest wine to make because he needs to work out “how much of the aromatic varieties, how much Nerello Mascalese, some ripe, some not so ripe, depending on what happens with the aromatic varieties.”
