This is a remarkably unique and rare bottling from Hirotake Ooka of Domaine de La Grande Colline who works 3.8 hectares of vines throughout the Northern Rhône in southern France. Saint-Joseph is an illustrious AOC and the second-largest in acreage under vine in the Northern Rhône, a bit smaller than Crozes-Hermitage.
Vinification: 100% Syrah from a .5 hecatre vineyard site, the grapes are hand-harvested from 25 year-old vines planted in granitic soil. Whole-cluster fermentation begins with a 15-20 day carbonic maceration and is followed by a spontaneous fermentation in barrel, kickstarted by native yeasts. The wine then ages for 24 months in old barrels. Unfined, unfiltered, no additional SO2. 12% ABV
