This is Gamay given a bit more room to stretch its legs, a heftier vin de soif distinct from its Loire or even southern Beaujolais cousins though that stonier element that gives weight in the palate is reminscent of Brouilly. Brilliant, wild Magma Rock from Vincent Marie of Domaine No Control working around Volvic in the Auvergne.
Vinification: 100% Gamay hand-harvested from the pure granitic soils of his Beauregard Vendon vineyard site where the vines are 25-years-old and east-facing. The grapes are whole-bunch, spontaneously fermented (ambient yeasts; no temp. control) in truncated neutral oak barrels with daily punchdowns over the course of 12 days. Devatting, pressing then takes place where both pressed and free-run juices are blended before a winter-length élevage in 13 hL casks. Bottled unfined, unfiltered, no additional SO2.
