Cristiana and Riccardo Meggiolaro are the husband-wife winemaking team behind their eponymous winery. Situated in northern Italy’s Veneto, amongst the Lessini Mountains (a pre-alps sierra just north of Verona and a natural border between the Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige). These are relatively old-vines of local grapes -- Durello and Garganega ~40 years old -- situated at good elevations and within reach of large and complex topographical systems: to the east Lake Garda, to the west the Adriatic, and to the south the ancient Po Valley. Wines of supreme freshness are hand-crafted here where the mountains meet the sky and sea.
Tasting Notes: A creamier, softer sparkling wine, with tart acidity and hints of starfruit, pineapple and grapefruit. Like a mimosa without the added juice, this is a perfect wine to drink with friends, over Zoom, during Sunday quarantine brunch.
Vinification: Despite its name, this cuvée is 85% Durello and 15% Garganega from the Meggiolaros’ vineyard site in Roncá whose subzone is the Contrada of Brenton. The soil’s composition is of a volcanic origin, and the 30 year-old vines here bathe in a southerly exposure at nearly 1500feet elevation. The vines are trained in the classical Pergola Veronese technique. Whole-cluster soft-press in stainless steel where fermentation is kickstarted by native yeasts, with occasional bâtonnage from the winemakers. Crown-capped and naturally sparkling, this wine is unfined and unfiltered with no additional SO2. 12% ABV.
