This is an intense red that is lifted by its bouquet - a complex delight from northern California’s Vinca Minor, a winery headed by Jason Edward Charles and Emily O’Hara Charles. They vinify in Mendocino County on the North Coast and tend some very old-vine Carignan in Redwood Valley - the northern reaches of this AVA.
Tasting Notes: A woodsy, piney, sagey nose. Black currant and pomegranate on the palate. Subtle tannins. Drink alongside a bowl of rich, hearty gumbo.
Vinification: 100% Carignan these grapes come from magnificently old vines ranging in age from 80-120 years old on Hawkeye Ranch in Redwood Valley, California. The soil type here is Pinole Gravelly Loam which is especially good at providing deep soils for the old-vines to continually produce at low vigor when bush farmed, so as to achieve an exceptionally high-quality (rather than quantity) yield. Certified organic, 100% whole-cluster fermented, before aging for 16 months, both in neutral french oak. Unfined, unfiltered, with no additional SO2.
