The Details
90% Garnacha Tintorera & 10% Mencía. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in chestnut vats. After a short maceration, the grapes are pressed and the wine goes into another chestnut barrel for 11 months. Bottled unfined, unfiltered and without any added SO2.
From José Pastor:
"La Barbacana comes from a single namesake 100+ year old vineyard planted on slate, iron, and quartz and sits at 650 meters elevation, situated in front of a 13th century castle and above an old mine where the Romans excavated slate, iron, gold, and other minerals. We are on the western edge of Bierzo where the region intersects with Galicia."
