The Details

Located in "Vermont" - a miniscule hamlet in Vilié-Morgon in Cru Beaujolais and not Green Mountain Country - this is a magnum of old-vine Gamay from Cru Chiroubles.

There is only one Chiroubles Descombes bottling, in magnum and 750, per year.

The vines are 50 years and older, planted on hilly sites of decomposed granite soils. The farming is organic, though not certified, and the harvest is manual. The vinification is traditional: whole-bunch, semi-carbonic maceration in large vats (cement, fiberglass, stainless steel) with native yeasts and no sulfur. The wine is aged in used Burgundy barriques for a year or more, making Descombes' release generally quite a bit later than those of his fellow vignerons. It is bottled with a very small amount of sulfur and without fining or filtration. 13.5%ABV

About Beaujolais

Wines from Beaujolais, a charming region in eastern France, are celebrated for their joyful and exuberant character. The star grape of the region is Gamay, and it shines brilliantly in the hands of Beaujolais winemakers. These wines are best known for their fruity and vibrant nature, marked by red berry, cherry, and floral aromas, often accompanied by a subtle earthy quality. Beaujolais Nouveau, released just weeks after harvest, is a beloved tradition that showcases the region's youthful and fresh expressions. Beyond Nouveau, Beaujolais offers a spectrum of styles, from the light and quaffable Beaujolais-Villages to the more complex and age-worthy Crus like Morgon and Fleurie. Beaujolais wines are celebrated for their food-friendliness and the sheer pleasure they bring to the table, making them a delightful choice for both casual sipping and pairing with a wide range of cuisines.
