This is Alain’s rosé, a wine that carries with it such a distinct sense of place it is easy to lose yourself wandering through a landscape of sensory imagination by bottle’s end. Alain Castex, a quiet but immensely dedicated farmer and magic maker in the Roussillon, is one of our greatest heroes. His wines are passion incarnate. It is hard to not speak of these wines without a tear, because the vibrancy, soul, and heart here...well it’s a form of spirituality unto itself.
Vinification: A blend of Grenache Gris, Grenache Noir, Syrah, and Mourvèdre hand-harvested from vines anywhere from 30-100 years-old, grown in a very complex soil, by turns the classic schist layers into sand, clay, and a kind of calcareous native to the region. The grapes are macerated for 4 to 5 days, spontaneous fermentation with only the help of native yeasts begins and finishes in stainless steel vats, and the Saignée Method aka “bleeding” is employed before bottling the juice. It goes without saying, but this is unfined, unfiltered and sees no additional SO2.
